HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- Richard L. Derringer, of Hyde Park, died Nov. 26. He was 79.
He was born in July 25, 1937, Pittsburgh, to the late George and Catherine Derringer, and received a Firestone college scholarship for four years including full tuition, room and board. He received his B.S. in mathematics from Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon) in Pittsburgh. In addition, he completed advanced mathematic courses at Adelphi University and intensive technical programs at IBM Systems Research Institute.
He joined IBM in: 1962 as a systems engineer at a major account, along with becoming a marketing representative and an instructor in the education center. During his career with IBM, he worked as a product planner for mainframe software products and developed courses for field education centers. From 1985-93, he interfaced with software vendors as a senior strategy administrator, product market support and product line staff.
Following his retirement from IBM, he taught mathematics at St. Joseph's High School and Shelton High School in Shelton, Conn. His community activities included serving as the president of the Hyde Park Board of Education; president of the board of directors for the Dutchess County Art Association and a member of the board of directors for the Dutchess County Arts Council. He was an active professional photographer for many nonprofit groups in Dutchess County and exhibited his personal photography locally.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Bayard Derringer; brothers and their wives, Bill and Nancy Derringer and Carl and Paulette Derringer; daughters, Cindy Slayton and Catherine Mills; son, Scott Derringer and his wife, Chris; grandchildren, Crystal, Melinda, Holly, Amber, Michael, Colleen, Nicole, Alex and Stephen; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, George Derringer.
A private memorial service will be conducted at the convenience of his family.
